Job Opening: Research Officer at the Children's Institute
The Children's Institute, UCT, seeks to appoint a full-time Research Officer (lecturer level)
on academic conditions of service with strong quantitative skills and experience in applied research.
A masters’ degree in economics, demography, health economics or sociology;
Proficiency in STATA;
Demonstrated experience in analysing large national household survey data sets;
3 years’ professional experience in conducting research relevant to social policy in South Africa;
A good understanding of the research literature and policy discourse related to social protection, child poverty, nutrition and food security;
Excellent English writing and communication skills;
Demonstrated experience in presenting research in government forums and at conferences.
In addition, applicants should have a good understanding of the challenges facing children in South Africa, be familiar with the social policy context and have a passion for working towards social justice.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
conduct secondary analysis of national household data, and source and compile relevant administrative data for the CI’s ongoing Children Count project;
plan and undertake research projects related to social protection, child poverty, food security and nutritional outcomes;
participate in inter-disciplinary research and advocacy opportunities to consider research evidence in relation to policy options;
provide training and support in quantitative methods and STATA specifically, as part of a planned capacity building programme at the CI;
publish research in academic and popular formats for a range of audiences;
develop their own research and advocacy proposals and raise funding to support new areas of work, with the support of senior staff.
The annual cost of employment, including benefits: R639 848.
